Daggers of the Mind: Psionic weaponry for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons

While Psionics are a somewhat controversial part of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, when used with the full knowledge of how they work, how they can affect a campaign and how to balance them, they can prove to be a rewarding alternative addition to play.

With this in mind (no pun intended), here are a few physical magic items which can enhance psionic abilities for those so attuned. Additionally, a few weapons are included which serve as modifiers to attacks made using psionic powers.

Unless specified otherwise, these weapons have no special function for non-psionically attuned PCs or NPCs!

Mindblade

This magic sword was created after careful examination of a Silver Sword used by Githyanki (q.v.) While it does not possess the same abilities as one of those storied weapons, it does possess a unique power of it's own.

When used in combat, the sword functions as a Vorpal Blade for a psionic character or NPC. However, when the wielder so wishes it, the weapon can attack a target struck with a Mind Thrust at the 4th level of Mastery, or one level of mastery higher than the wielder, whichever is greater. The sword will function thus even if it's possessor does not have that psionic discipline. The Mind Thrust costs the same number of psionic points as it's "normal" counterpart.

Description: The mind blade itself is a short, broad sword. Along the length of it's blade, runes of power have been carved to focus the mind abilities of it's wielder.

Psychic Hammer

Similar in composition to the Mindblade, this huge maul can be wielded with deadly efficiency by a psionically endowed individual. The hammer has two effects in it's function. First, it will act as a Warhammer +2. However, it's greater power is in that it can, at will of the wielder, issue a Psychic Crush attack, even if the wielder does not have that discipline. The Psionic point cost is the same as if the attack had been made through regular telepathic means. Note that the target need not be struck by the hammer for the attack to succeed.

Diadem of Vitality

This light headpiece, when worn by a psionicist, will allow the "storage" of an additional ten psionic points for up to twenty four hours. Note that the item is never found charged, and if it's wearer is slain the points "stored" are immediately lost. The wearer must "will" the points into the diadem, as if they were spent on a discipline. The points are then manifested when the previous point expenditure by the wearer is refreshed. There are no restrictions on what the points may be used for, but only one such device may be worn at a time.

Bracer of Body Weaponry

Appearing to be a mere leathern bracer, this item actually assists the wearer in focusing the discipline of Body Weaponry so that it's effect is equivalent to an additional two levels of mastery higher than originally possessed. If the wearer does not already possess that discipline, then the Bracer endows the discipline at the first level of mastery (never going any higher).

Ring of Healing

This device focuses the healing power of Cell Adjustment to an additional level of mastery. Thus if the wearer is of the 1st level, the ring allows Cell Adjustment at the 2nd level.

...

I trust that these items will be useful to all who use Psionics in their campaigns, if for no other purpose than sparking the idea for a few items of your own creation!
